Feeling Stressed Or Anxious? Try This Body Scan Meditation Exercise

What Is Body Scan Meditation For Relaxation?

Body scan meditation is a mindfulness practice that involves mentally scanning your body from head to toe.

Instead of trying to change how our body feels, this exercise helps us observe sensations without judgment.

It encourages deep relaxation, enhances self-awareness, and allows us to release built-up tension.

Benefits Of Body Scan Meditation For Relaxation

Regularly practicing body scan meditation can:

  • Promote deep relaxation by calming the nervous system.
  • Enhance mindfulness by helping us stay present in the moment.
  • Improve body awareness and reduce physical tension.
  • Encourage better sleep by easing restlessness before bedtime.
  • Support emotional well-being by fostering self-compassion.

How To Do A Body Scan Meditation For Relaxation

Follow these simple steps to practice body scan meditation:

1. Find A Comfortable Position

Sit or lie down in a quiet space. If you’re comfortable, close your eyes to minimize distractions.

Begin by bringing awareness to your natural breathing rhythm—inhale and exhale without changing anything.

2. Bring Awareness To Your Feet

Start by focusing on your feet. Notice any sensations—warmth, tingling, or pressure.

Observe without trying to change anything. If you sense tension, acknowledge it with curiosity rather than resistance.

3. Move Up Through Your Legs

Shift your focus to your lower legs, knees, and upper legs. Pay attention to any physical sensations or contact with the surface beneath you.

4. Scan Your Hips And Lower Back

Notice how your hips and lower back feel. Are they carrying tension?

Simply observe any tightness or discomfort without judgment.

5. Bring Awareness To Your Upper Body

Move your attention to your upper back, chest, and shoulders. These areas often store stress.

Allow your breath to flow naturally as you notice any sensations.

6. Focus On Your Arms and Hands

Gently bring awareness to your arms, wrists, and hands. Feel the subtle sensations—warmth, coolness, or stillness.

7. Scan Your Neck, Head, And Face

Finally, bring your focus to your neck, jaw, and forehead. Many of us hold tension in these areas without realizing it.

Observe any sensations and allow your facial muscles to soften.

8. Expand Awareness To Your Whole Body

Take a moment to sense your entire body as a whole.

Notice how you feel after the scan—hopefully more relaxed, grounded, or in tune with yourself.

Tips For A More Effective Practice

  • Practice regularly: Even just 5–10 minutes a day can make a difference.
  • Be patient: It’s normal for the mind to wander—gently bring it back.
  • Pair it with deep breathing: This enhances relaxation and mindfulness.
  • Use guided audio: Listening to a guided body scan meditation can make it easier to stay focused. See the top of this blog post for my body scan meditation video or watch it on YouTube.
